Our planet is in a profound transition and there is a need for us to hold the center. As Jung noted, transformation arises out of a marriage of chaos and a new order. The qualities of Purpose, Passion, Play, Presence, and Perspective can evoke a deep meeting of our soul with the soul of the world. By practicing these five qualities, we can root ourselves in a meaningful life, enabling us to hold the center both for ourselves and the world.
Living a commitment to a life purpose can catalyze our soul’s possibilities. The gift of deep purpose offers us an orientation, a focus, and the unfoldment of our soul’s potential. Clarifying our purpose removes ambiguity and frees us to make life choices in alignment with our soul’s direction. As the poet Rumi declared, ”Enough of words and metaphors; I want burning, burning, burning!“ The passion of the divine spark within us reveals the Holy Fire as the source of radiant life. There are many ways this illuminating fire may ignite us: as ecstatic aliveness, as mystical love, as direct encounter with the soul’s beauty.
The joyous creativity of play, ruled by the goddess Sophia, opens us to the spontaneous revelations of life. It liberates us from our fixed concepts of our self and expectations of how things are supposed to be. We can be spiritually reborn out of creative imagination and the infusion of joy.
The freedom of being fully present resurrects us from fragmentation and liberates us from attachments and fears associated with the past and future. We can immerse ourselves in the divine presence of Now, living in the present moment, being fully alive.
Perspective is the state of consciousness from which we see. The Buddhists refer to “the view” and Pir Vilayat awakened seekers to see from the soul’s perspective. As we make our spiritual journey, we pass through various stages of development. With each initiation, our perspective widens, transforming our view and experiencing life from the soul’s perspective.
In this seminar, we’ll explore these five qualities through teachings and practices from various spiritual traditions. We’ll explore guidance from Jungian and Transpersonal psychology and engage in creative exercises, community sharing, and personal reflection.

Thomas Atum O’Kane is the founder and director of the Spiritual Guidance Wisdom School. For more than 20 years he has taught eight primary trainings on a variety of themes in five countries. During that time he has also conducted over 60 pilgrimages to sacred places throughout the world, honoring the contribution of many different spiritual traditions. Atum has followed an inter-faith spiritual path and has been profoundly blessed with astounding teachers. As Secretary General and senior guide in the Sufi Order, he worked side-by-side with Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan. His advisor for his Masters and PhD in Transpersonal Psychology was Reb Zalman Schachter, the founder of Jewish Renewal. Both were root teachers, mentors, and spiritual friends for over 30 years. Atum is also a graduate of the Guild for Spiritual Guidance, with a focus on Christian mystics, Teilhard de Chardin, and Jungian Psychology. Frances Vaughan, one of the founders of Transpersonal Psychology has also been a significant mentor for Atum, and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche is his source of inspiration for his Buddhist studies.
